Eames EA117 Office Chair, Herman Miller 1960s – New Checker Fabric by Alexander Girard
The EA117 Aluminium Group office chair is one of Charles and Ray Eames’s most celebrated designs for Herman Miller. First introduced in the late 1950s, the Aluminium Group series has become an icon of modern office furniture, valued for its elegant lines, ergonomic comfort, and timeless functionality. This model from the 1960s features a four-star base on casters, armrests, and a mechanism allowing height adjustment, tilt, and swivel. The polished aluminium base contrasts with the chromed seat structure, which shows some areas of peeling, consistent with its age. Overall, the chair remains in attractive vintage condition.
The seat has been newly upholstered in Checker, a textile designed in 1965 by Alexander Girard for the Herman Miller textile division and reissued by Maharam. The checkerboard pattern, here presented in olive / pink, embodies Girard’s playful modernist spirit. Maharam’s re-edition uses a durable cotton and polyester blend, staying true to the archival colors while offering a fresh and vibrant look. With its strong geometric presence and enduring design legacy, this chair is both a collector’s piece and a striking functional addition to any workspace.
