Large modernist ceramic wall panel by J.G. Picard, made in Vallauris, France, circa 1960s.
Composed of individually glazed ceramic tiles set within a slim wooden frame, the panel depicts a highly stylised bird or rooster in sweeping black forms, punctuated by vivid red accents against a richly textured blue, grey and white ground.
The surface is particularly expressive, with layered, crackled and mottled glazes creating considerable depth and variation across the composition. The strong graphic treatment and free-form decoration are characteristic of the experimental spirit of post-war Vallauris ceramics.
The work is signed J.G. Picard in the lower right corner and marked Vallauris.
A substantial decorative piece with a strong architectural presence, equally suited to a Mid-Century Modern interior or a collection of French studio ceramics.
Dimensions: H 63 × W 32 cm.
Condition: Good vintage condition with age-related wear to the ceramic surfaces and wooden frame. The variations, crackling and irregularities in the glaze are inherent to the decorative firing and handmade character of the work. Please refer to the detailed photographs.
