Ochre Stoneware Vase by Nils Kähler for Kähler, Denmark, 1960s
Tall sculptural stoneware vase designed by Nils Kähler for the renowned Danish ceramic workshop Kähler during the 1960s.
Founded in 1839, Kähler became one of the most influential names in Danish ceramics, known for combining traditional craftsmanship with modern artistic experimentation. Throughout the 20th century, the workshop developed a distinctive visual language that continues to be highly regarded among collectors and interior designers today.
This vase reflects that legacy beautifully. The elongated cylindrical form is decorated with contrasting textures and glazes: a deep earthy brown upper section combined with a richly patterned lower body in warm ochre and tobacco tones. The repeating geometric relief creates a rhythmic surface that changes subtly depending on the light and viewing angle.
The proportions are particularly elegant, giving the piece a strong architectural presence despite its restrained dimensions. More than a functional vase, it works as a sculptural ceramic object characteristic of the refined Scandinavian studio pottery of the period.
A beautiful example of mid-century Danish ceramic design with a tactile and highly decorative quality.
